Decorating for a Western Christmas

Our Western Christmas Window Display at H&M Valley Ranch Store

Folks, decorating for a western Christmas does not necessarily mean expensive new lights, wreaths, silk flowers, and new ornaments. Take advantage of the western trend of using things that you have and making purchases for western items that will accentuate your western displays. The window display that we have created for our store consists of: a vintage wooden ladder, an old pair of stirups, a saddle minus the shoulders, a toy gun, a few sprigs of grape vines, some sprays of pine, and a strand of greenery wrapped with lights. Now, we did have to our advantage the greenery- seven years old, I might add, but we only purchased four new ornaments and red tinsel garland- all were less than $6.00. We also had a couple of large stars that we added that were from the store as well. But, you can substitute those for something that you already have as well. Rustic western decorating is wonderful and you can make it your own!

How to Decorate Your Western Home on a Budget For the Upcoming Holidays

With the upcoming holidays fast approaching, spending additional funds on new western furniture may not be an option for you. Instead, change some simple things in each room to give your home a burst of new energy just in time for the season of fall and winter festivals.

We spent less than $20 for our fabulous rustic western decor center piece for our foyer table during the Thanksgiving Holiday. The majority of the $20 was the fall foliage and candy - the rest of the items were found around the house.

To start building your center piece find a pair of boots that are rustic, but semi-clean. Next add your fall foliage to the boot using your favorite colors of flowers. We opted to select flowers that would match our boots, not necessarily our room. Place your boot in the center of your table, now is the fun part. Browse through your closet, storage building, decorations, your kids' closet/toy box and start gathering western decor items that are fun, shabby, and authentic. Now, we did use a "toy gun" in our piece, but most of the other items are functional western gear. After we balanced our western decor center piece, we added seasonal candy pieces to offer to our guest when they passed by. You can add "mini" center pieces throughout your home for added conversation and to offer "mini" gifts to your guest.

Of course cowboy boots do not have to be your center piece - an old saddle, rigging, or even a couple of small stick horse with the ends cut down will make wonderful starts to your holiday center pieces.

Shabby Chic Western Decor Ideas

We have said before that the possibilities are endless when decorating with shabby chic with a little western kick. Yes, we have stated before that "print" resources never die at the Ranch, we love going through the magazines of the past and renewing old ideas. With that said, take a close look at the above "chalk board" or "family message board." Did you really examine the details of the board? Really? Look towards the floor, against the wall, behind the table legs, even up along the wall. A recycled screen door! Who comes up with these fabulous ideas? Whoever your are, we love it!

Okay, so you are asking yourself, "How do I make my own?" I know, we wanted to know what it would take and scrambling around to find out if we had everything to create our own. First, take a screen door- the more shabby the better! Remove all of the metal mesh remnants that may be left behind- use gloves to remove any glacier points, metal, or old nails. Once all of the loose particles are removed carefully measure a smooth piece of plywood or other surface material that will adhere to the "chalk paint" found at the local hardware store. We recommend spraying the chalk on first before attaching to the screen. After the board is sprayed, place it in your screen and attach with hardware. That is it folks, you have now created your own shabby chic message board.

As pictured above they have used a table with possible screws in the screen for mounting and security. Make sure that you secure your board to an even surface using mounting screws, otherwise it could be subject to falling. It is not recommended to just prop it against the wall or other objects unless created as a bi-fold door, which is just a few more steps, but easy enough to do.

This room divider caught my eye and interest since I love decorating with tacks and western nail heads. The concept is simple in design and the average home decorator could pull this off with a little more spice to boot! Tip to creating the simple design? A compass - it helps make perfect spacing and leaves out the guess work.

Suggestions that would enhance this room divider into a more western appeal? Notice the lattice/woven mesh top - replace with smooth wood: cover with leather, cowhide, create a painting on all three sections (one painting or individual paintings), how about a photo frame, or a message board for the family? Room dividers can provide focal points of decorating or become a subdue part of the room (like the one in the photo), the design of your divider will determine how much emphasis you want placed on your new piece of decor.

Rustic Wooden Chair - Neck Tie Lattice

The great thing about "print" is that most of us who truly love rustic, vintage, western, and just plain decorating ideas, tricks, and hints will hang on to a magazine until the cover wears off! The photo to the left caught my eye from Country Home Dec 06/Jan 07 edition. The vintage wooden chair is revived with "neck ties" instead of the traditional wooden or lattice seat. Thoughts ran through my mind, what would I use - cowboy print fabric, leather, or something else more western? What about western neck ties? That would be a fabulous answer to resolve issues of too many ties that you can't part with.

Take a closer look at the this vintage chair, what a great way to reestablish an old chair that would be consider trash by placing something of treasure to you. What treasures do you have packed away that you can't find a way to display them? If they are treasures, why not display them in a useful manner that will serve to provide not only memories, but also provide functionality to you and your family. Recently, my dad passed away so I thought that I could use his jeans that I kept and make a lattice seat for one of my chairs or maybe several. It will serve as a means to provide honor and memories of my dad and also enrich the decor of my home.

Whatever you do, make it memorable for you and your family - above all enjoy decorating and living in your vintage and western decor home.

Rustic Leather Window Valance

If you get a chance and are lucking enough to find one if you don't have a subscription to American Cowboy Magazine, turn to the "Living The Dream" section. Above is one of the photos from James Ray Spahn and article written by Carrie Nathans. We would like to focus on the window treatment - leather (assuming that it is elk or deer) rustic and simple valance. It is hard to tell, but the three sections are probably what we call - crossed or "x" laced together and fringe at various lengths twisted to give the simple look more "pop". Recently, the colors have drifted from the "natural" finish of brown or light tan to the colors of the rainbow! Mixing of deep reds with violets and every other combination are bursting onto the western scene. When selecting window treatment colors, don't be shy about staying with traditional, especially if you like pzazz! We are in an era of combination of colors, motifs, and blending of all tastes - go with it!

At the Ranch we are excited that leather is not only traditional, but becoming very popular in the urban modern homes as well. Look for more fusion of the two cultures in the months to come and a twist of vintage in the urban as well. Not this time, even though other magazines are popping up "April/May" issues. I hope that our local area is not cutting out our favorite western magazines - they already have with several other popular ones. Well, look on the bright side - that means I will just have to quit being lazy and buy a subscription. Why not? They practically bring it to my door, no counter checkout, waiting to get a parking space, and driving around to different department stores to try to find them. Um...should have thought of that one earlier.

Look for new western décor ideas at H&M Valley Ranch Store in 2009! The designers at H&M are creating new western décor products for the upcoming year that are likely not to be found anywhere else. Vintage western décor is still hot this year, and you will probably see more over-the-top ideas this year. Look for vintage western doors that now serve as end and coffee tables – adorned with large clavos, leather, and hand-painted western art. Recycled barn wood to columns are being transformed into oversized pieces of western furniture, most are simple in design but makes the statement, “Western ranch, and proud of it.” For those who like the “a collective” western décor – a mixture of a little bit of everything, this will probably be your biggest year.
